Rosacea (pronounced rose-ay-shah) is a chronic condition affecting the skin of the face, mostly where people flush. It usually begins with redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead and if left untreated can slowly worsen to include other symptoms. Rosacea can be controlled through medication, and it is important to see a dermatologist at the first suggestion of unusual redness.

It was recently estimated that 45,000,000 people world-wide suffer from rosacea, more than 14,000,000 in the United States alone, though the majority are not aware of their condition. As the causes of rosacea are unknown and it usually is not possible to cure this condition completely, it is important to avoid those situations or things - known as "triggers" - which may cause the condition to worsen. 

The following are known to increase the symptoms of rosacea:

* Cigarettes and alcohol

* Cold, heat and wind

* Extreme conditions like steam baths or saunas

* Spicy foods

* Unhealthy stress and irregular sleeping habits

* Overactivity or too much sport

* UV-rays and solariums

In general, any activity or substance which might overly increase the flow of blood to the face should be controlled carefully or avoided.

In addition, cosmetics, make-up and other products which are applied directly to facial skin, can lead to a worsening of the symptoms of rosacea. For this reason, anyone with sensitive skin, and most especially rosacea patients, must choose cleansers, moisturizers and other facial products with great care and an understanding of the ingredients, which must be mild and soothing.
